Efficient Optical, Thermal and Acoustic Coating Monitoring in Advanced Production Processes

Project Logo

Motivation and Procedure

In the manufacturing of lithium-ion cells, the early processes of mixing and coating of the electrode slurry play a decisive role in securing the quality of the cell. The detection of defects on the surface and within the electrode layers represents a major challenge for in-line quality control of lithium-ion cell production, which is due to the large coating width and the high coating speeds. The early, continuous detection of defects makes it possible to minimize rejects, reduce manufacturing and material costs, and enhance the quality of the cell.

Research Objectives

The research project seeks to collaboratively develop a camera- and ultrasound-based sensor and diagnostic system which is able to measure all relevant quality criteria in the coating process of metal films. The control systems must be able to capture the entire coating width (large-area) and have a flexible design so that they can be integrated into both new and existing systems. The relevant quality criteria are as follows:

  • Layer thickness
  • Layer thickness homogeneity
  • Defect detection
  • Adhesion characteristics
  • Moisture content
  • Residual moisture homogeneity
