Seminar: Application Scenarios for Plastics-based Additive Production Processes

The Format

Until today, additive manufacturing has been mainly used in prototype manufacturing. Due to improved process stability, higher build rates, larger building space, and new materials with enhanced material characteristics, the technology is increasingly used in machine and tool making as well as in series production. Thus, additive manufacturing systems are ready for industrial use alongside conventional manufacturing processes. The technology has strong potential to reduce costs and manufacturing time, especially for small-batch production.

The seminar participants receive lecture notes, which they can use to freshen up their knowledge and prepare for the course. An online assessment can be completed shortly before the start of the course in order for participants to review their own state of knowledge. The seminar will conclude with an exam. Afterwards, a transfer exercise is worked on in order to transfer the learned material to one's own business environment.

Application Scenarios for Plastics-based Additive Production Processes

The seminar presents various process technologies and discusses the possibility of enhancing them through plastics-based additive production processes. Particular emphasis is placed on filament-based fused deposit modeling and polyjet technology. Moreover, the entire field of plastics-based additive manufacturing will be discussed. Aside from Rapid Prototyping, concrete applications of Rapid Tooling will be presented, using the example of thermoforming and PUR/RIM technologies. Finally, the chances and challenges of Rapid Manufacturing will be discussed.   

Examination

The exams at the end of the seminars are each made up of a multiple-choice test and an essay.
