Accumulators: Development and Application
The "Battery Engineering & Safety" group deals with issues related to the development of lithium-ion battery systems and their application safety. The researchers focus on the mechanical, electrical and thermal design of battery modules and packs consisting of prismatic, cylindrical or pouch cells. In addition, the PEM experts are building prototypes, drawing on all the necessary production resources from RWTH Aachen University's Electromobility Laboratory (eLab) – from mechanical parts machining and 3D printing techniques to electrical contacting technology such as laser welding. The "Battery Abuse Center" there provides the complete infrastructure for mechanical, electrical and thermal testing and certification of battery systems.
Topics
- Design of battery systems: Battery cell selection and mechanical, electrical, and thermal design
- Prototyping: Rapid assembly of the designed battery systems
- Testing: Performance of functional tests on the battery system
