"Electric Mobility": PEM's 700-Page Book Published as Print Edition


The book "Electric Mobility: Fundamentals of a Progressive Technology", which was recently published as a free download by the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University, has now been released as a print version. In a completely revised third edition, the standard work published by Springer covers all aspects of electric mobility on more than 700 pages – from its history to technological developments, legal framework conditions, and new business models.

Essential questions about infrastructure and sustainability

"Due to new vehicle components such as battery, power electronics, electric motor and fuel cell, the entire value creation process is changing," says PEM Director and co-editor Professor Achim Kampker. "In the new edition we also critically address essential questions about the sustainability of electric mobility and the infrastructure it requires." In seven major chapters, the book's 90 contributors provide extensive information on the history of e-mobility, electric vehicle-specific systems and their respective production, technical and regulatory frameworks, the actual and necessary infrastructure, novel business models along the entire value chain, and realistic sustainability potentials of electric mobility.

Education and training of future skilled workers are crucial

"It is the responsibility of today's scientific community to further develop electric mobility and make the production of its core components – battery, electric motor, and fuel cell – as cost-efficient and resource-efficient as possible," says PEM Management Member and co-editor Professor Heiner Heimes. "The effort that European research institutes are putting in must also serve the goal of competing globally."

Renowned guest authors

The writers also include renowned guest authors, such as battery expert Professor Dirk Uwe Sauer as well as Professor Rik W. De Doncker, expert for power electronics and electric drives, each from the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) of RWTH Aachen University. The publication as an "open access" format is thanks to the sponsorship of the mechanical engineering company elexis AG.
