Standardized test procedures for the approval and for the production of electric vehicle batteries for the Chinese and German market

The BMBF research project "StarTest" promotes the development and validation of standardized test procedures for the approval and testing of traction batteries in electric vehicles for the Chinese and German markets.

The battery is the key component for the comprehensive qualification of electrically powered vehicles. In addition to high-energy storage densities, safety in particular is an important aspect in the development of new battery systems. Up to now, there are no uniform test and approval procedures for the production and homologation of batteries in electric vehicles. Against this background, the aim of the "Star Test" research project is to derive generally applicable test and approval procedures for batteries in the German and Chinese markets by scientific studies on user requirements, fault mechanisms and existing test methods. The developed procedures will be validated in a laboratory-based production process and finally submitted to the responsible standardization institutions in China and Germany in the form of a standardization proposal. This is intended to establish uniform standards for test and approval procedures in the long term, which will lead to a significant increase in safety in the field of battery technology. Furthermore, development efforts can be systematically reduced and potential cost reductions can be realized in the context of testing, production and homologation of traction batteries for electric vehicles.

Universal and uniform standards for test and inspection procedures can further increase the safety of batteries and reduce development costs. This also offers the opportunity to increase the performance and reduce the costs of electric vehicles.
