Motivation and General Procedure

As part of the “Adaptive City Mobility 2” project, PEM at RWTH Aachen University will be responsible for the structure and assembly of the pilot vehicles. Solutions for the vehicle structure are to meet research objectives in the three areas as outlined below, providing suitable use cases in the areas of vehicle body paneling for adjustment concepts or interior assembly of equipment concepts.

The solutions arrived at can be implemented, tested, and validated using the pilot vehicles; at a later stage, in the vehicle production program, they can be drawn upon as “lessons learned.” By focusing on solutions for small-batch series production, this sub-project shall provide an important contribution to further develop and advance electric mobility in Germany.

Research Objectives

  • Adjustment Planning: Realization of an integrated adjustment planning process for vehicle body components
  • Integration Concepts / Adjustment: Development of a process for the measurement of components and subsequent creation of balancing elements using a 3D printer to simplify vehicle assembly
  • Equipment: Construction of modular assembly equipment with the aim to reduce equipment costs and planning expenditures by 50 percent compared to current systems
