Improving the Resource Efficieny of Lithium-Ion Batteries Through Remanufacturing
Motivation and Procedure
The research project seeks to sustainably increase the resource efficiency in the production of lithium-ion batteries across all stages of the life cycle with the help of a suitable remanufacturing concept. Existing battery packs will be analyzed with respect to remanufacturability and the resulting costs; in a next step, best practice methods will be derived.
Newly developed, innovative battery packs and modules will be optimized, and, as a result, implemented in a prototype. As a basis for development, a StreetScooter vehicle will be used. Subsequently, the reverse logistics processes and disassembly of the respective components will be carried out; modules, cells and other components will be combined with new and used components to form a recyclable battery pack.
Research Objectives
- Design guidelines for a resource-efficient and cost-optimized remanufacturing of lithium-ion batteries
- Development of an overall concept for a remanufacturing battery
- Demonstrator development and validation of concepts
