PEM Develops Digitization Standards for Battery Production

In the project "DataBatt", the chair "Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components" (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University, together with other research institutions, is exploring the integration of horizontal data structures in battery production. Digitization continuously generates a large amount of data, which enables an increase in productivity and output of cell production through pattern recognition methods. By integrating so-called horizontal data structures, information can be made usable across processes.

Lack of standards for digital production processes

Due to a lack of standards, however, plant manufacturers and operators have so far been faced with challenges in the acquisition of data via sensor technology, in plant communication via defined interfaces, and in data processing and storage. By providing real-time capable databases with the corresponding use of inline sensor technology, it is possible to optimize not only individual processes but also the entire production control and increase product quality through "predictive quality". However, this requires the continuous integration and application of data along the entire process chain.

Transfer of concepts from information technology to production technology

The players in the "DataBatt" project therefore want to develop standards for integrated interfaces and horizontal data structures. The aim is to transfer concepts from information technology to production technology, to extend them and to make them applicable. The project partners are to develop methods for data integration and standardized data processing procedures that will enable data aggregation and use along the entire value chain of battery cell production. The project is part of the federally funded competence cluster "Intelligent Battery Cell Production" (InZePro).
