PEM Researches to Increase Re-Use of Pre-Used Battery Cells
In the scientific joint project "Model2Life", the chair "Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components" (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University is involved with so-called second-life usage scenarios for mobile battery test systems and their model-based system design. The project is part of the federally funded competence cluster "Battery Utilisation Concepts" (BattNutzung) and aims to achieve a significant increase in the reuse rate of used, still functional battery cells. In addition, the "Model2Life" partners want to achieve an improvement in the product and process design of battery systems by optimizing the interface between the "1st life" as the initial use and the "second life" as the further use of a battery.
Exploring the influence of aging and lifetime on performance and safety
To this end, the research partners are also investigating the influence of aging and service life on the performance and safety of batteries in their second life cycle. The project is dedicated to the overarching question of how the development of cell and system concepts must be designed in the early stages to meet the requirements of later "second life" use. PEM supports the project in the application identification and in the requirements analysis in the first as well as in the second life cycle of the battery systems. In addition, the experts are contributing their know-how in product design suitable for remanufacturing with simultaneous consideration of producibility. Based on existing preliminary work in the field of "Design for Remanufacturing", the concepts developed can be deepened and extended. In the end, harmful operating situations of the battery during its initial use should be identified and a real-time adaptation of the operating strategy with a view to subsequent use should be made possible. Economic recovery of functional battery cells not only offers significant potential for cost reduction, but also leads to a reduced use of resources.
