Lithium-Ion and All-Solid-State Batteries: PEM Publishes Production Guides
The chair "Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components" (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University has published two comprehensive guides on current innovations and findings in battery production together with the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). On more than 20 pages each, the publications go into detail about the functional principle and the different manufacturing steps of the battery types. With regard to lithium-ion batteries, the processes of electrode manufacturing, cell assembly, and cell finalization are highlighted – from initial metering and mixing to final maturation and end-of-line testing. "Technology developments already known today will reduce the material and manufacturing costs of the lithium-ion battery cell and further enhance its performance characteristics," the authors say.
ASS battery: Setting new standards?
Meanwhile, the all-solid-state (ASS) battery promises to set new standards in several dimensions in the area of tension between higher energy and power density, longer service life, increased safety, and significantly reduced costs. However, "On the way to becoming a mature energy storage device that can be used in various end products, the all-solid-state battery – despite considerable progress – still faces several challenges," the publication by PEM and VDMA states. Starting with the classic lithium-ion battery, the development path to the all-solid-state battery is characterized by ongoing changes in cell structure and the production technologies used to manufacture them.
