"FoFeBat2": PEM is Active in Further "FFB" Development

The chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University has received a grant of 2.28 million euros from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The sum will go towards the "FoFeBat2" sub-project, which is supported until May 31, 2024, and in which PEM is working on the expansion of existing battery cell formats and the digitalization of production processes. The project contributes to the establishment of the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB in Münster, whose technology development and production planning PEM supports as an official partner.

"In international competition, it is becoming increasingly important to avoid dependencies on other energy storage technology markets and to be able to act independently in all process steps," says PEM director Professor Achim Kampker. The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB in Münster, in the creation of which other renowned research institutions across the region are involved, is therefore intended to provide an infrastructure with which companies and institutes can test, implement and optimize the near-series production of new batteries on a large scale. This should accelerate the innovation and commercialization process of production technologies for existing and future battery cell formats.

Plant configuration and selection for hardcase and pouch cells

The task of the RWTH chair in the second phase of the multi-stage "FoFeBat" project is to expand the cell formats of Fraunhofer FFB and to supplement the design of the cell forming technology at an early stage. In addition, PEM is to help procure the assembly facilities for prismatic hardcase and pouch cells that are still to be set up there and to drive forward the digitization of the entire process chain. This includes, for example, the implementation of a virtual image of products and processes as well as the establishment of analysis processes and their seamless linking with the production process chains.
