SimBAS
PEM Develops Cost Model for Real and Virtual Battery Cells
The chair "Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components" (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University and four other research institutions are working on the simulation of battery cells and applications in storage systems in the "SimBAS" project. It is part of the federally funded competence cluster "Battery Utilisation Concepts" (BattNutzung). The "SimBAS" partners are developing a combined storage simulation tool that covers the value chain from the battery cell to the application. In this way, for the first time, aspects of the design of current and future lithium-ion battery cells are to be mapped onto a suitable system design for specific applications.
Stationary and mobile applications
Technical, economic and design-specific aspects will be taken into account. As application fields, the partners are investigating both stationary and mobile areas, each with suitable profile and operating data. The resulting holistic simulation tool will be made available as "open source" with a targeted "3-clause BSD" license in order to achieve the greatest possible benefit for research and industry. The sub-project of RWTH Aachen University is dedicated to the development of a database in which battery cells – starting with the material properties of the reactants along the individual manufacturing steps up to the product – are considered in their case.
Building a cell database
Within the database, both the electrical properties and a cost consideration for each step are to be modeled and calculated automatically by algorithms. Based on real cell examples, the database shall be scalable to virtual cells of any combination of cell components and dimensions. The results of the database will be made available in a "digital battery passport". This document shall contain any parameters needed for the overlaid overall system simulation. In addition, the passport is to be kept open and expandable with a view to the results of other cluster projects.
Statements on material requirements, performance, ecology and cost targets
Easy access should ensure the use in other tools. The implementation of the interfaces as well as the verification of the functionality are therefore also part of the research project. At the end of the project, it should be possible to analyze and evaluate real and virtually designed cells with regard to material requirements, electrical performance, ecological footprint and achievable cost targets.
